Pupils have said 'bon voyage' to the headteacher of Loretto RC Primary School School in Musselburgh as she looks forward to retirement after a quarter of a century of service in the county.

They sang French songs at a special assembly to celebrate Margaret Anne McBean's commitment to language learning throughout her teaching career.

The farewell event, which was held recently, was attended by everyone at the school as well as representatives of Loretto Parent Partnership and East Lothian Council.

Mrs McBean, 60, has worked as a teacher in East Lothian for 25 years, taking up the post of headteacher at Loretto Primary in January 2015.

She was also headteacher at Macmerry Primary School, depute headteacher at Pencaitland Primary School and held various posts at St Gabriel's RC Primary School in Prestonpans including principal teacher and acting headteacher.

Mrs McBean was one of the first headteachers to be interviewed by pupils about why she wanted to join Loretto RC Primary.

Four children from the pupil panel played an active role in interviewing her and were given the chance to provide their feedback to the formal appointment panel.

Although the interview by youngsters did not form part of the formal process, they had the opportunity to interview candidates and give their views.

Mrs McBean said: "I feel very privileged to have been the headteacher at Loretto, sharing in the lives and learning of children and families.

"The staff team are wonderful and I know they will continue to deliver their very best every day. I’m looking forward to being off the clock and spending more time with family and friends.

"I loved being a teacher and headteacher in East Lothian and I have many wonderful memories."

She added: "I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and appreciation and I am grateful for the kind wishes, words and gifts."
