Two men have been charged with hare coursing after being spotted harassing the animals in a field south of North Berwick.

The incident took place on Friday with police being made aware that two men and three German pointers were chasing hares in a field.

Following an investigation the two men were located at a field three miles south of North Berwick and charged.

They stressed the seriousness of the offence and encouraged members of the public to come forward if they suspect hare coursing to be happening in their area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "On Friday 17th February 2023 officers were called to North Berwick after they were alerted to a possible ongoing hare coursing incident.

"Two males and three German pointer dogs were spotted chasing hares in a field.

"Following an extensive investigation, both males were charged with an offence (hare coursing) under the Protection of Wild Mammals Scotland Act 2002.

"East Lothian Police take incidents of hare coursing seriously and would encourage any member of the public who suspects hare coursing to contact police on 101."
