ALL six of East Lothian’s senior football clubs could soon be lining up in the Scottish Cup.
Ormiston Primrose’s hopes of joining Dunbar United, Haddington Athletic, Musselburgh Athletic, Preston Athletic and Tranent Juniors in the country’s premier cup competition received a boost ahead of Christmas.
The club were given permission by East Lothian Council to build an enclosure at their New Recreation Park home.
John Greenhorn, secretary of the club, said there would be a meeting with interested parties in the New Year in a bid to take the project forward.
The creation of an enclosure would be another item ticked off as the club attempts to secure a Scottish Football Association (SFA) licence.
Among the benefits of the licence is funding from the governing body and also entry into the Scottish Cup.
Mr Greenhorn said: “It is just a step-up in prestige.
“The licence brings in income and also gives you access to players.
“It is an attraction to players to play in the competition.
“It is an attraction to get a shot at it.”
Previously, the football club had an enclosure at their former home of Recreation Park, which they moved from in 2018.
The new enclosure, which could cater for about 200 people, would run alongside the sideline to the north of the pitch.
The council’s planning department gave approval to the proposals after there were no objections from members of the public.
Mr Greenhorn highlighted that there were other hurdles to be overcome before the club could take part in the cup competition.
He said: “The big thing is to put in floodlights.
“You have got to have floodlights, which are expensive and require planning permission.”
The club, who host Tweedmouth Rangers on Hogmanay, play in the Second Division of the East of Scotland Football League.
Mr Greenhorn was hoping the glamour of the cup would further strengthen links between the club and the community.
He added: “The village is getting bigger all the time.
“We hope to attract more interest from the village.
“At the moment, to watch the game, there is a grass banking but this is much better and is covered.”
For many years, Preston Athletic were the county’s sole representative in the Scottish Cup.
However, Haddington Athletic and Tranent Juniors gained their licence ahead of the 2020/21 competition and were joined by Musselburgh Athletic, who won the South and East Cup Winners Shield.
The following year, the Olivebank side participated as licence holders alongside Dunbar United.
