Musselburgh Racecourse has abandoned its final meeting of 2022, a planned Christmas jumper raceday on Monday, due to frozen ground.

The racecourse announced its decision on Facebook, apologising to those who would be disappointed.

The racecourse said: “Based on the weather forecast there are no prospects of racing on Monday 19th December 2022, due to frozen ground.

“Therefore, we regret to inform you that our Christmas Jumper Raceday has been abandoned.

“We apologise for the disappointment this may have caused and hope we can welcome you back in 2023.”

Racecourse manager Bill Farnsworth said he had little choice but to abandon the meeting, describing the track as like “concrete”.

While temperatures are forecast to improve on Monday the track was not expected to thaw out in time after a week of sub-zero temperatures.

Mr Farnsworth said: “It was an easy decision unfortunately. The turf is like concrete and there is no chance we would be able to race on Monday so it’s better to call it off now and give people as much notice as we can.”

Those who had purchased tickets for the event will be contacted via email and a refund will be issued.
