Strong winds failed to put pay to an outdoor family event earlier this month, when ‘Spark the Park’ provided a range of fun activities for children of all ages.

Organised by East Lothian Play Association (ELPA), with funding from Fa’side Area Partnership, Spark the Park took place over two days in the park between Tranent Library and Lindores Drive.

Guest speakers included ward councillor Fiona Dugdale, members of the Tranent Wombles, representatives of East Lothian Libraries and East Lothian Courier’s storyteller, Tim Porteous.

About 200 members of the public joined in the fun, which included conker championships, den building and art areas.

There were fears that high winds on the first day would force the event to be called off.

But organisers were relieved to see the weather calm down, and events on the second day went ahead as planned.

Theresa Casey, partnership officer at ELPA, said: “It was a wonderful two days.

“It was really great to see so many people come along and get involved.

“This is something we’d love to do again at some point in the future, too.”

Fiona Dugdale, Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry ward councillor, said at a community council meeting after the gathering: “It was a really good, well-organised event that really warmed my heart.

“Things like these are great for the community, especially coming out of Covid, as they bring us all together, which wouldn’t have been possible during lockdown.”

Mike Falconer, chairman of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, said: “This was a great use of the green space they used in Tranent.

“I didn’t manage to see all of it but it was a fantastic event and was really nice to watch.”
