TWENTY-THREE nights of roadworks are scheduled on the main route through East Lothian.

More than 4,000 metres of the A1 between Gladsmuir and Dunbar will be resurfaced between November 7 and December 9.

Transport Scotland’s operating company BEAR Scotland is carrying out the night-time roadworks, which will result in 4,287 metres of carriageway being resurfaced.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland’s south east network manager, encouraged motorists to be aware of the works, which take place between 7.30pm and 6am.

He said: “These resurfacing improvements on the A1 in East Lothian represent a significant investment by Transport Scotland to ensure smoother and safer journeys for motorists.

“We’re fortunate that there are convenient diversion routes along this stretch of the trunk road so we don’t expect these works to cause significant delays.

“If you do need to travel on these nights, our advice is to allow a couple of extra minutes for your journey.

“We’re grateful to road users and local communities for their patience and understanding while we complete these improvements.”

The works are as follows:

  • November 7-11: The eastbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed north of Thistly Cross Roundabout. Eastbound traffic will be diverted off the A1 at Abbotsview via the A199 to re-join the A1 at Thistly Cross Roundabout.
  • November 14-18: The westbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed between Oaktree and Gladsmuir. A diversion will be signposted from Oaktree Junction via the A199, re-joining the A1 at Gladsmuir Junction.
  • November 21-24: The eastbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed at Abbotsview. Eastbound traffic will be directed to leave the A1 at Abbotsview Junction eastbound off-slip and immediately re-join via the eastbound on-slip.
  • November 28 to December 2 and December 5-9: The eastbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed at Dolphingstone. A diversion will be signposted from Dolphingstone Junction via the A199, travelling east through Tranent and re-joining the A1 eastbound at Gladsmuir Junction.
  • November 29 to December 2: The westbound carriageway of the A1 will be closed at Abbotsview. Westbound traffic will be directed to leave the A1 at Abbotsview Junction westbound off-slip and immediately re-join via the westbound on-slip.

Emergency services will be given access through the works at all times.
