NEGOTIATIONS are ongoing as East Lothian Council attempts to sell a building once earmarked to become East Lothian’s first crematorium.

The local authority has not used Alderston House, to the north of Haddington, for more than a decade.

It has been for sale for a number of years and a deadline for offers passed last month.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council confirmed there were interested parties.

He said: “We have a preferred offer and are looking to conclude the transaction.”

Council staff left the building, which dates back to the late 1700s, in September 2010.

Planning permission was previously given for the building to be turned into a crematorium but that stalled.

The category B listed building was previously used as a private house, while other previous uses include a convalescent home for the Scottish Rural Workers’ Society and a nurses’ training school.

The building was on the market three years ago with an asking price of £795,000.
