A STUNNING photograph from a former Dunbar Grammar School pupil is featuring in a national exhibition.

Literal Framing by Thomas Calder, who has left the secondary school since entering the competition, captured Dunbar Leisure Pool with a dramatic sky.

The image, taken at sunset, impressed judges in the Scottish Civic Trust My Place Photography Competition.

The annual competition encourages young people aged four-18 to use photography to explore the buildings, architecture and archaeology in the places they live.

This year’s theme was ‘My Place, My Space, My Story’ as part of the Scottish Government’s Year of Stories.

Thomas was highly commended in the secondary age category, with the best images revealed at South Block in Glasgow city centre on May 25.

Claire Slowther, headteacher at Dunbar Grammar School, praised her former pupil and said: “Thomas Calder has just completed S6 at Dunbar Grammar School and is going on to Heriot-Watt University to study data science.

“He also has a real appreciation and passion for the arts.

“Thomas studied Higher photography in S6 with no experience previously.

“He is a really talented musician and wanted to try a different art form in S6.

“He really enjoyed the practical side of photography and can see himself carrying on with this.

“Higher photography has an extra-curricular dimension which all students need to complete and teachers shared the competition details as a means of students fulfilling this aspect of the course.

“The competition brief was to capture architecture from your youth in an alternative manner.

“Thomas went with the intention of taking a photo at sunset.

“He noticed the boat and how well framed it looked. He was really pleased with how the photo turned out.”
