Longniddry and District Rotary Club has raised £1,725 to help people in the wake of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The club raised the money through community donations and the sale of Ukrainian lapel ribbons, with the money going to two charities.

Rotarian Derek Easton said: “With the ongoing horrendous scenes from Ukraine, we are trying in our own small way to give what support we can.

“To date we have donated a total of £1,725. £975 has been sent to the Rotary Foundation Disaster Relief Fund, which is at present prioritising relief in Ukraine. We have also donated £750 to Shelterbox to help support their work there.”

The club now plans to engage with the YMCA shoebox appeal, helping send medical, hygiene and household supplies to Ukraine.

Derek added: “For the future, following a moving presentation at Longniddry Parish Church, we are proposing to help with the YMCA’s backpack/shoebox appeal.

“These will then be distributed through YMCA Europe to the YMCA in Ukraine, who can ensure they get to the most needed areas.”
