GARY Anderson’s hopes of a third World Championship title are over for another year after a narrow semi-final defeat to fellow Scotsman Peter Wright at Alexandra Palace tonight.
In a cracking, back-and-forth match, the Musselburgh ace battled back from being three sets down early on to pull within a set, only for an inspired finish from 2020 champion Wright to see ‘Snakebite’ seal the deal with a double 20 and win 6-4 to reach the final.
The Flying Scotsman had looked in with a good chance of victory when pulling things back to 5-4 down and with momentum in his favour, but Wright was inspired in what would prove the final set to snuff out the East Lothian man’s hopes.
Wright finished the match having hit 24 180s, a record for a PDC World Championship match.
He will face Englishman Michael Smith in the final.
