LOCAL primary school pupils helped plant purple flowers to mark World Polio Day.
Representatives from Longniddry and District Rotary Club planted crocus bulbs as part of the global End Polio Now campaign.
They were joined by schoolchildren from Preston Tower and St Gabriel’s Primary Schools in Prestonpans to plant 3,000 crocus bulbs in the green grassed areas between Port Seton and Prestonpans.
East Lothian Council landscaping department also assisted with the efforts.
The planting of the purple crocuses was to remind the county of the need to keep fighting to eradicate polio.
Rotary president Tom Shearer and Rotarian Douglas Farquhar explained the importance of World Polio Day to the children who were in attendance.
Rotarian Derek Easton said: “Although the work to eradicate polio has been very successful, there are still cases in the developing world.
“It was explained that the idea of the purple crocus is to show the link between the children in many developing countries having their pinkies dipped in purple dye to show they have had their vaccination.”
