A £250 DONATION is helping to create a pond and marsh at Amisfield Walled Garden.

Volunteering Matters Action Earth is offering grants to help local communities respond to climate change.

Funded by NatureScot, the grants support volunteers of all ages, backgrounds and abilities in practical outdoor activities.

A spokesperson for Amisfield Walled Garden, which is on the outskirts of Haddington, said: “With the money we bought some tools, a pond liner and some marsh plants.

“The plan is to let the marsh fill up with rainwater over the winter so that it’ll be ready to plant up with bog plants in the mid to late spring.

“We dug out turf to create the marsh, then used the turf to create a ‘Beetle Bank’ (a long mound of earth). This will provide a useful habitat to various insects.”
