THE 474th anniversary of the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh at Musselburgh – one of Scotland’s “biggest and bloodiest” battles – will be commemorated next month.

The ceremony, organised by the Old Musselburgh Club on September 10 each year, will take place at 1pm at the battle’s memorial stone at Crookston, off Salters Road, at Wallyford.

It will be preceded by a walk along the Pinkie Cleugh Battlefield Trail, starting at the Roman Bridge in Musselburgh at 11am.

Musical tributes will be played by a piper at the memorial stone and the names of ten Scottish soldiers who were slain in the battle will be read out. Floral tributes will also be laid.

Last year’s commemoration was streamed live as part of the East Lothian Online Heritage Festival amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
