IT IS A CASE of hair today, gone tomorrow for one county biker, as he prepares to shave off the hair he has been growing for six years.

Alastair Ross, from Gifford, is one of three men from biker club Tribe Edinburgh taking part in the weekend’s shave, with the trio raising money for Forth One radio station’s Cash for Kids.

Tribe Edinburgh, formerly called Tribe 21, is one of the Blue Angels Support Clubs.

As well as meet-ups, the group has taken part in several charity events over the years.

Joining 39-year-old Alastair will be Steven Archibald, also 39, and James Anderson, 37, both of whom are from Mayfield in Midlothian.

Despite growing his hair for the past six years – longer than his oldest son Rudy has been alive – Alastair, who lives on Walden Terrace, said he and his pals did not take much convincing.

He said: “We were at a meeting and talking about ways that we can raise money for charity.

“I then suggested a sponsored head shave as I am the one with the longest hair. It was a spur-of-a-moment thought and decision.

“Steve was up for doing it but James took a bit more convincing. I’ve been growing my hair for six years so nervous is an understatement.”

Previously, Alastair helped raise money for the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh; it was this that inspired his choice to raise money for Cash for Kids.

He told the Courier he wanted to choose a charity that did work similar to that of the children’s hospital. And as Cash for Kids was a local charity helping young people in Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothians, it was an easy decision to support it.

In addition, all of the hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, with Alastair saying: “It’s like killing two birds with one stone.”

The charity makes wigs for children and young people who have lost their hair through illness.

Keen bikers Alastair, Steven and James will be braving the shave on Saturday morning at 11am at The Bikers Cove cafe in South Queensferry. Trained hairdressers will be doing the shaving.

All of the appropriate coronavirus regulations will be followed, including social distancing.

The trio initially hoped to raise £500 but raised £300 in 24 hours and met their target a couple of days later.

They upped their target to £1,000 and have so far raised nearly £800.

Alastair said: “It’s been amazing, the response we have had so far.

“We’ve had quite a lot of support and people in Gifford have been rallying behind me too.”

The event will be broadcast live on Forth One, so those who wish to tune in and support Alastair, James and Steven can do so.
