FITNESS classes across East Lothian have been cancelled for the next two weeks due to new restrictions announced by the First Minster, enjoyleisure has announced.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Nicola Sturgeon announced new restrictions for the whole of Scotland, with tougher restrictions for those in the Central Belt – this included the Lothian healthboard area, which includes Edinburgh and West, Mid and East Lothian.

Among the new restrictions, contact sports and indoor group exercise activities for those over 18 are suspended. Current rules remain in place for those under 18.

Gyms are allowed to remain open but only for individual exercise.

The new restrictions start at 6pm tomorrow (Friday) and run until Sunday, October 25, inclusive.

As a result of the new measures, enjoyleisure announced at 4pm yesterday that it had suspended all of its group exercise fitness classes, including those in studios, halls and aqua classes for that period.

Customers who booked and paid for a class and require a refund should contact the sports centre directly.

People are asked to be patient as phone lines are likely to be busy.

All children’s coached activities, including swimming lessons and gymnastics, can continue as normal; however, this is strictly for children and those under the age of 18. Those over 18 will not be able to take part in these activities.

However, sports centres run by enjoyleisure will remain open and bookings can still be made for individual gym sessions, lane and family swim sessions, and two-player racket sports.

Those attending club sessions are asked to contact their club leader directly for further information.

A spokesperson for enjoyleisure said: “The senior management team at enjoyleisure are awaiting further detail from the Scottish Government on the full implications of the announcement.

“Once this detail has been provided and discussed, we will advise customers of any further outcomes.

“We would like to reassure customers that at present the current restriction is being placed on adult (over-18) group coached activity sessions only.

“We thank all of our customers for your continued loyalty and support.”

enjoyleisure runs six sports clubs across East Lothian: Aubigny Sports Centre in Haddington, Dunbar Leisure Pool, the Loch Centre in Tranent, Meadowmill Sports Centre near Prestonpans, Musselburgh Sports Centre, and North Berwick Sports Centre.

The Mercat Gait Centre in Prestonpans is managed on behalf of East Lothian Council by FES Ltd.
