THE headteacher of a school which recorded positive cases for coronavirus has spoken about the “difficult time” it has gone through.

Last month, Preston Lodge High School confirmed “a very small number of people in school” – believed to have been several students – had tested positive for Covid-19.

And in a newsletter to parents and carers last Friday, Gavin Clark, the school’s headteacher, said: “In the coming months every school in Scotland will have to deal with positive cases in their community, and sometimes within their school premises.

“However, last week has shown we are very capable of managing those cases with speed and confidence, keeping staff and students safe.”

Four of the county’s secondary schools have recorded positive tests, with Haddington’s Knox Academy, Musselburgh Grammar School and Ross High School, in Tranent, alongside Preston Lodge.

Meanwhile, positive tests have also been recorded at Preston Tower Primary School, in Prestonpans, as well as Haddington Primary School.

Last week, further government restrictions were introduced in a bid to tackle the global pandemic.

Mr Clark added: “Our students were really pleased that the guidelines for young people changed to their advantage.

“Students can now congregate outside of school in groups of six, which has been a great boost to student wellbeing.

“I really wish our parents and carers could visit the school at the moment.

“I think such visitors would be proud of the committed and calm way in which their children have adapted to a new learning environment.

“Thank you, as ever, to our focused and hard-working staff for making that possible.”
