NORTH Berwick residents got a surprise on Wednesday as their tap water appeared to be brown and cloudy.

A resident first posted about the issue on social media at 10.30pm.

However Scottish Water has said the issue first came to light on Tuesday evening.

Areas such as High Street and streets in the new Cala Homes development were affected, however parts of Dunbar were also said to have been impacted.

One resident said the issue was still ongoing into yesterday morning (Thursday).

It is thought the issue was caused by a faulty tap valve.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Water said: “Some customers in some areas of Dunbar and North Berwick and surrounding areas in East Lothian have experienced some discolouration to their water supply. This was caused by an issue with a valve at Traprain Law service reservoir which serves a large area.

“The discolouration was due to natural sediment in the pipe becoming disturbed as a result of the disruption on the network. We have carried out localised flushing to alleviate the discoloured water which can take time to work its way through the network. We thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience.”

The vast majority of customers should now have their water supply go back to normal as the system has been flushed of the discoloured water.
