A MINUTE’S silence is being held at 11am today (Tuesday) to honour those who have died carrying out their duties amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It also coincides with ‘International Workers Memorial Day’, held every year to commemorate those who have died or been injured while working.

East Lothian’s MP Kenny MacAskill is one of many participating in the minute’s silence and is inviting residents across East Lothian to take part.

The Scottish government will also be participating and the silence led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr MacAskill said: “April 28 is ‘International Worker’s Memorial Day’ [IWMD], where we remember working people who have lost their lives, or have been injured in work.

“This year it is particularly important as we honour those who have lost their lives during this pandemic working to keep our communities safe throughout this international crisis.

“The slogan of IWMD is “Remember the dead – Fight for the living”  It’s more than a sentiment just now.  It’s a call to action to treat our key workers properly.

“I invite you to join me and others at 11am in holding a minute’s silence in our homes and, for key workers, places of work.”

This event is different to the 'clap for our carers', held every Thursday at 8pm, which pays tribute and is a thank you to all of the key workers still carrying out their duties during the ongoing pandemic.
