A HOUSING developer could help to pay for new facilities for the youngest children attending a village’s primary school and nursery.
West Barns Primary School currently has four classrooms and a temporary nursery housing a single classroom.
However, that could all change with an extension being proposed by East Lothian Council.
An East Lothian Council spokeswoman said: “We have submitted a planning application to expand the nursery space at West Barns Primary School and provide additional facilities for the school.
“The proposals would see the existing nursery temporary unit replaced with a larger nursery, as well providing the school with a new library and an additional classroom for primary one.
“We have secured developer contributions from CALA Homes for the classroom works at West Barns and funds will also be received from the Scottish Government’s 1140 grant for the nursery expansion.
“£1.507m has been set aside in our five-year capital programme for the project.”
CALA Homes have planning permission for nearly 90 homes to the east of the primary school, off Edinburgh Road.
Plans for the school extension are currently with the local authority’s planning department.
