A NEW Deputy Lieutenant has been appointed in East Lothian.

Sir Hew Dalrymple, of Blackdykes Farm, near North Berwick, whose family own the Bass Rock and have been active in East Lothian life for more than 300 years, takes on the role.

His late father, Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, who died in December 2018 at the age of 92, was a former Lord Lieutenant of East Lothian.

Lord Lieutenants are employed by the Queen and carry out a range of duties in their counties, aided by their deputies.

Sir Hew is a successful businessman involved in a wide range of companies as a business consultant, mentor and marketing adviser.

He has roles in a number of North Berwick groups and organisations, and also runs the family property and farming company, through which he was involved in the setting up of Leuchie House as a national respite centre as landlord and adviser.

Sir Hew was also a founding trustee of the Scottish Seabird Centre and is president of North Berwick RNLI and North Berwick Yacht Club.

Michael Williams, East Lothian’s Lord Lieutenant, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Sir Hew as a Deputy Lieutenant for East Lothian, as he brings with him an invaluable knowledge of community and commercial life across our county.

“It is also particularly appropriate as his late father also served as a Deputy Lieutenant before becoming East Lothian’s Lord Lieutenant for 14 years.”
