EAST Lothian Council has warned that incidents of fly-tipping will be investigated after a large heap of rubbish was dumped near Queen Margaret University at Musselburgh amidst the Covid-19 lockdown.

The pile of discarded debris included an old settee.

A council spokesperson said: “It is a difficult time for everyone and many people will be using their time at home to clear out some household items but the householder is responsible for the appropriate disposal of their waste and should be careful if they contact a third party to take it away.”

Councillor Norman Hampshire, the council’s environment spokesperson, added: “Unfortunately, we are aware of a number of individuals offering to take away household waste and charging households to do so but are then dumping the materials in the countryside.

“Householders should always ask for proof that the company are registered with SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency).

“The council will investigate all incidents of fly-tipping and will take appropriate action, including potentially recharging for clean-up costs.

“If the materials are traced back to a householder then those costs will fall to them.

“Until the amenity centres re-open, if possible, any surplus waste should be stored safely and I am grateful for the patience of local residents during this challenging time for us all.”
