VISITORS and commuters at North Berwick Railway Station thought they were in the wrong place, as a sign indicating bus times was displaying information for other towns.
The error was spotted before lockdown by Harry Barker, chair of both East Lothian Community Rail Partnership and Rural East Lothian Bus Users.
The electronic sign in question was erected near the station’s entrance/exit two years ago and was displaying bus times for the East Coast X7 service from Edinburgh to Dunbar and Eve Coaches’ 130 service to West Barns.
Mr Barker said: “It is not difficult to ascertain which buses serve North Berwick station – all you have to do is walk to the bus stop at the front of the station.
“The signs rarely worked at all and when they did the information was displayed in a small font which could not be read from the platform, the signs being about 12 feet from the ground. And they were impossible to read when the sun shone on them.
“It discriminates against those with even mild sight problems and remains useless.
“They also listed the buses in service number order, not in order of arrival time, so earlier buses could be well down the list and later ones at the top, with most passengers thinking that the first bus listed was the next one along, thereby confusing everybody.”
A spokesperson for ScotRail said: “Although we maintain the screens, the information is provided by SEStrans (South East Scotland Transport Partnership). We flagged the misinformation on the X7 bus service to them to investigate and resolve.”
They added: “On height of the structure, this is the standard for information screens at stations to allow more people to see it if it’s busy, and to prevent vandalism.”
The screen has since been fixed and is now displaying the correct bus times.
