A FORMER Knox Academy pupil almost cried tears of joy after finding out she would fly the flag for Scotland at a prestigious international event.

Carla Beaton is one of 30 young women taking part in Miss International UK, with the winner going on to represent the United Kingdom at Miss International in Tokyo later this year.

The 23-year-old, who is Miss Edinburgh International, got confirmation that she would take part in the competition in June earlier this month.

She said: “A few people have said pageants are so old fashioned and demeaning but I don’t think so, maybe in the past, but really they exist to empower women.

“Especially coming from my background, I want to inspire people that nothing is impossible, there are no limitations to where you can go and they are a really powerful tool.

“When I first got the email, I almost cried.

“I was so happy but the following night I could not sleep thinking about what will I wear? What if I fall?

“I’m excited but nervous too.”

The former Edinburgh University student would not only wear a crown and sash if she won but would also receive items from the competition’s various sponsors.

Carla graduated with a degree in politics in 2018 and now works at the Scottish Parliament for one of the country’s South of Scotland MSPs.

Carla said: “My main drive behind politics and wanting to get involved is wanting to make a difference.

“Being adopted, I wanted to do something for those kids who are not as lucky as myself.

“I thought pageants were a really good way of doing it and raising the profile of a charity. I am really keen to work with Action for Children Scotland.”

The Gifford resident is also keen to promote the work of SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) and how exercise and physical wellbeing can improve a person’s mental health.

The former Yester Primary School pupil was a competitive cheerleader while at university, which sparked a love of fitness.

She said: “Obviously, for me, health is a really big thing. I want to promote exercise and healthy living – not only to improve physical health but mental health.”

Now, ahead of the event, which takes place at the Park Hall Hotel, near Preston, Carla is looking to strike up a partnership with local businesses. The competition is split into three rounds: eveningwear, swimwear and judge’s interview.

She said: “I am interested in reaching out to bridal and local couture and just small businesses that could really benefit from the publicity.

“Also, hair salons, nail technicians – those kind of people, it is a beauty pageant first and foremost.

“Anybody that is involved in that world, I’m looking to reach out to.”
