COMMUNITY spirit was in abundance as Tranent Colts FC and Ross High Rugby Club squared up against each other to support town icon Scott Glynn in his cancer battle.

Walking football and walking rugby matches were followed by ‘Shorts, Shirts and Shenanigans’, an evening of quizzing, disco, nibbles and drinks, and a chance for the Colts and Ross High to continue to battle it out to decide the overall victor of the day.

To no one’s surprise, the Colts won the football and Ross High won the rugby, meaning the final challenge was the decider, the ‘Question of Sport’ style quiz.

The Colts had a strong start to the quiz, but a late surge led Ross High to be named the overall winners with a final score of 16-14, winning the inaugural trophy of the competition.

The event raised £1,200 in aid of former Ross High RFC president Scott to help him and his family while he undergoes treatment for cancer.

John Tinlin, current president of Ross High RFC, said: “It was fantastic to see two sports coming together in support of our former president Scott Glynn.

“It’s something Scott has always wanted to see, close links between rugby and football. Both clubs have been very supportive of Scott.

“It was great to see Scott being able to make an appearance in the day’s events.

“The letters ‘MBE’ have been added to Scott’s name on the presidents board, an accolade that the club is very proud of being bestowed on our former president.”

Scott, founder of the Walk With Scott Foundation that has so far raised over £300,000 for local causes and charities, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours and was presented with the medal at the East Lothian Council offices at the beginning of August.

Sharon Peel, co-organiser of the event with Wendy McFadden, added: “There was a desire from the committees of both clubs to help Scott and his family at this difficult time.

“Over the years, he has done so much to help both Ross High RFC – as a player, committee member and president of the club – and Tranent Colts, where he was heavily involved in both the walking football and para football squads.

“Scott has a dream to bring our rugby and football communities together.

“What he has started, we will take forward – we are delighted this will now become an annual event.”

The football and rugby squads were not the only ones honouring Scott, with Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council (TECC) recently presenting him with a prestigious Achievement Award.

David Forrest, chairman of the community council, said: “TECC wanted to congratulate Scott and show our appreciation for the magnificent work he has done.”

A JustGiving page set up to help support Scott and his family has so far raised more than £4,400.
