A SPEED camera on East Lothian’s busiest road was destroyed after it was set on fire in the early hours of Saturday.
After a passing motorist reported the camera alight at about 1.30am, firefighters from Edinburgh used a high-pressure hose to put out the fire on the westbound carriageway of the A1, between the Dolphingstone flyover and Bankton Junction.
Police are now appealing for witnesses.
Sergeant John Forrester of Haddington Police Station said: “The camera was completely destroyed and the cost of replacing it is substantial.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and who can assist us in tracing those responsible.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The camera has been targeted by vandals before.
