The 39th annual Dunbar Civic Week kicks off in style tomorrow (Saturday) with the Queen"s Parade, crowning ceremony and Dunbar Primary School fete.
From 1pm, the royal procession will leave Lauderdale Park en route to the primary school, where Chloe Young will be presented with her crown by headteacher Helen Gillanders at about 2pm. This will mark the official opening of the school fete, featuring a variety of stalls and attractions.
Throughout the week-long celebration there are a number of sporting events, including the prestigious Belhaven Trophy at Winterfield Golf Club on Monday from 7.30am; five-a-side football with Dunbar United Colts from 5.45pm on Wednesday; and the Fun Swim with Dunbar Swimming Club at the Leisure Pool between 6.30pm and 8pm.
A highlight of the sporting week is the Bike Fest at Hallhill. Now in its second year, the Bike Fest proved popular in 2008 when hundreds of young cyclists took part in the parade down High Street, as well as the skills competitions, including a Bunny Hop contest.
For those who enjoy a more relaxed pace, there is a dominoes tournament next Friday at Dunbar Day Centre from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, or visitors can browse Dunbar Art Club"s annual exhibition at Our Lady of the Waves church hall on weekdays from 10am to 4pm.
Dunbar Youth Drama and Theatre Alba will perform "The Insect Play" at Lauderdale Park from 6.30pm.
Stephen Bunyan, chairman of Dunbar Community Council, was optimistic about this year"s programme, saying: 'The community council is encouraged by the number of events going on this year and the school fete will be a major draw for people. I just hope eveyone has a lovely day.'
