LAST week, Boundaries Scotland issued their revised constituency boundaries for the 2026 Scottish Parliament election.

Every 10 years, boundaries are reviewed and, with high population growth in Midlothian North and Musselburgh, it seemed inevitable that changes would be made to my constituency boundaries to be sure that everyone is fairly represented.

The initial boundaries proposal for my constituency was perplexing and I gave evidence at the local enquiry that was held in December.

One of my main concerns was that the initial proposal for the new boundaries covered three separate council areas: East Lothian, Midlothian and City of Edinburgh. This would have been unique for a constituency and would have caused significant practical issues for any busy MSP constituency office.

I was glad that the review of the revised constituency boundaries took on board my feedback.

However, I will be extremely sorry to lose Musselburgh, Wallyford, Whitecraig and Monktonhall from my constituency.

I also hear the concerns about the other proposed neighbouring constituency boundaries. Musselburgh, along with Tranent, is now set to be included in a constituency with Edinburgh East and it does seem unnecessary to change the name of East Lothian to Lothian Eastern.

I understand that constituency boundaries are not drawn to maintain existing council or community council boundaries, but I hope that Boundaries Scotland take on board concerns from the local community in the second consultation that is under way now until May 15.
