A MINISTER who describes himself as “a walking ecumenical movement” is to start work for the Church of Scotland in Musselburgh as a community development worker.
The Rev Dr Chris Knights, who has worked in the Church of England and Episcopalian Church for more than 24 years, takes on the newly created role, which aims to bring the kirk and community closer together, on April 1.
He described the new job as “all about creating and developing church and community links across the whole of Musselburgh, particularly in the Pinkie Brae area.” Dr Knights, who was born in London, spent time serving the Newcastle Diocese after studying at Durham College.
Now 52, he and his wife Catherine are living in Hawick, where he has been developing a therapeutic gardening programme for people with learning disabilities.
Dr Knights said he was not overly concerned with Christian denominations, and wanted all sides to come together with a common goal.
He said: “What matters above all else is that all Christians take God and Jesus Christ seriously.
“My church background means that, in working for the Church of Scotland, I am a walking ecumenical movement around the town.” Dr Knights said he enjoys working within communities and was immediately interested in the new post, when he saw it advertised by the Musselburgh Parish Grouping.
He said: “When I begin working in Musselburgh there will be a lot to learn but the potential for the church to be seen as more interested in, and more concerned about, all aspects of the life of the people in the town is huge and exciting.
“This new way has to be about teamwork and a team effort.”
