A NATIONAL chain, which has more than 900 branches across the UK, could soon open its doors in Haddington.

Specsavers has been given advertising consent for the remaining vacant unit in the town’s retail park.

Currently, the retail park, on Haddington’s western edge, is home to The Food Warehouse, Home Bargains, Aldi, Costa Coffee and a petrol station.

Specsavers, which already has a branch in Musselburgh, was given the green light by East Lothian Council for illuminated advertisements yesterday (Wednesday).

No objections were sent by members of the public to the local authority’s planning department regarding the proposals.

Drawings included with the application show how the vacant unit – previously earmarked for a pharmacy – would be transformed, with the creation of consultation rooms and a diagnostics area, as well as an office and staff room.

A second application, for the installation of air conditioning condenser units, is due to be decided upon by the end of next month.

Specsavers have been contacted for a comment regarding an opening date and the number of jobs that could be created.
