A MAN assaulted his girlfriend after she told him he was not the father of her child, a court heard last week.

Dylan Brown, from Tranent, lashed out at the woman after she broke the news to him while the pair were engaged in an argument at a bus stop in Prestonpans last year.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told that Brown and his girlfriend were waiting at the bus stop at Bankton Terrace when he became violent towards her.

A struggle ensued between the pair following the verbal argument and, after grabbing the woman on the body, Brown proceeded to kick her on the body.

The court heard that Brown then got on the bus by himself and police were contacted by a concerned member of the public who had witnessed the attack at about 10.40pm on August 20 last year.

The bus was subsequently stopped by police officers as it made its way through Wallyford and Brown, of Well Wynd, was arrested and charged with the assault on his girlfriend.

Lawyer James Stewart said that Brown and the woman ended their relationship on the night of the attack and added that he was currently serving a previously imposed community payback order for a separate offence.

Mr Stewart said that his client was making “excellent progress” with the social worker assigned to him and the relationship with his ex-girlfriend had been “a volatile one”.

Mr Stewart told the court that the assault took place after the woman told Brown he was “not the biological father” of the young child.

The solicitor added that Brown had been left “extremely upset” at the revelation and he would happily comply with any non-harassment order if it were to be imposed.

Sheriff Peter McCormack admonished Brown on the charge and issued him with a 12-month non-harassment order banning him from making any contact with the woman.

Brown, 21, was also in court for sentencing on two motoring offences after he had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving and two charges of failing to stop for police.

Brown drove a vehicle dangerously by driving at excessive speeds, swerving onto the opposing carriageway and causing his vehicle to collide with a stationary vehicle at Pinkie Road, Ashgrove, Linkfield Road and High Street, all Musselburgh, on December 4, 2020.

He also admitted to failing to stop for police on the same date.

He also admitted to a second dangerous driving offence and failure to stop on the A1 at Dolphingstone on May 11, 2021.

Sheriff McCormack banned Brown from the road for a total of 21 months and ordered him to carry out 135 hours of unpaid work, all as an alternative to a custodial sentence.

Brown was also told he will have to pass the extended driving test before he is allowed to drive again following his ban.
